@firedog you’re really feeling positive lately huh?

Hey, it's a legitimate question, IMO.

Of course the price of anything is a legitimate question. However, it’s often not what one says but how one says it that makes all the difference.

Given his only two comments in this thread, I sense some negativity.

Some might prefer to call it a different and, perhaps, less enthusiastic perspective.

I just find it interesting that WADAX, who in my opinion hit the market just right for a 500K+ DAC with their cables and now with what may be a softening economy are releasing a trickle down "reasonably priced" DAC whereas MSB and DCS are catching up to WADAX with their version of the super expensive DAC.

Interesting times in the DAC world.

Just live: https://dcsaudio.com/edit/introducing-varese

Extracts:

The Varèse Music System comprises five components: a Core; a User Interface, an optional Master Clock, and two Mono DACs – one for each audio channel. It also includes a dedicated Varèse Remote Control and a new app, dCS Mosaic ACTUS.  A dedicated CD/SACD Transport will also be available from 2025.

New technologies & innovations

Varèse utilises a suite of new technologies that have enabled us to further enhance performance and deliver sound with even greater precision and clarity.

These include dCS Tomix, a patented new clocking technology: ACTUS, a bespoke interface that carries audio, control and timing signals between components; and the Differential Ring DAC, a new version of the dCS Ring DAC™ that represents the biggest change to our DAC architecture in a generation.

More information about Varèse and its supporting technologies will be published on dcsaudio.com on August 9.

We’ll provide an in-depth look at the system’s design over the next few months, with deep dives, whitepapers and videos showcasing the technologies and features that drive its performance.

Varèse will debut on static display at the Hong Kong AV show on August 9, before travelling to other events worldwide throughout 2024. Active demonstrations will take place in the UK and US from September 2024 onwards.

Systems will be manufactured in limited quantities and shipping will commence from late 2024.

I'm sorry, but this almost looks like a joke. dCS has created a parody of themselves: how many boxes can we make to play music? You can even add an extra one to play silver discs. Where do you put all of this stuff even if you could afford it? Sorry, again, I guess I'm being practical. Honestly, I love new tech and all that, but this one really leaves me cold.

Main System: [Synology DS216, Rpi-4b LMS (pCP)], Holo Audio Red, Ayre QX-5 Twenty, Ayre KX-5 Twenty, Ayre VX-5 Twenty, Revel Ultima Studio2, Iconoclast speaker cables & interconnects, RealTraps acoustic treatments

Living Room: Sonore ultraRendu, Ayre QB-9DSD, Simaudio MOON 340iX, B&W 802 Diamond

Also, don't you think that the face design looks a bit too similar to the Innuos Pulse series of streamers?

I'll bet one of my DACs that the price of the recommended power cables (for example - Transparent Opus line) plus interconnects could easily transcend the value of all my audio gear spendings during 45 years into this hobby. And some ...
I've read elsewhere it will be a new proprietary design for the ICs.

I like that dCS totally went for it. I can’t wait to learn more about the reasoning for what it’s doing and to learn about what it’s actually doing in the new differential ring DAC.

We’ve been using AES, S/PDIF etc… forever. Perhaps there’s a better way or a better way to transport it.

With respect to a separate box for physical media. Thank god! That’s likely the most expensive part. Those without CDs and SACDs likely don’t want that added cost if they won’t use it.

I’ll bet one of my DACs that it ships with all the cables needed.

I read rumoured Varèse will sell at 220k USD and that's presumably without transport. Honestly I might be spending in region of 100k (GBP) in the next year or so, but I am not a headphones user, and I need to play records including 78s. I'm happy with my digital front end. So my 100k would go something like 35k on Technics SL-1000R with two arms/carts, between 30 and 60k on speakers and power amps (depending on whether I went Active / kept my Snell Type A III if remaining passive) and maybe 20k on Pre/Phono/DAC such as Makua. Although, I'm not in the market for Varèse particularly, I'm interested in the whole audio range - beyond what I may use or could afford. My post point is that the actual demand for Varèse (I imagine/for argument's sake) will come from people who likely already have a dCS stack at home. So - seems to me - four big questions in ascending order of importance are:

1. What will the audio "press" (independent and not so independent) say about Varèse?

2. What will Varèse buyers do with their old stacks?

3. What will Varèse buyers say about how/how much Varèse improves on their existing dCS gear?

4. Have Varèse buyers - in their own minds - achieved value for money trading up?
