Rhythms of the Chakras

By Glen Velez

This great percussionist on a dark room with some low level blue light brings you peace.

As a music lover, Yoga and Ta-chi practitioner I play this music at least once a week.

Happy listening,

Roch

They're (Grimaud and Gabetta) both lovely to look at and exquisite to listen to. I wonder though if the redbook edition is as good as the DL or perhaps even a better choice. Have not heard the CD. Was hoping for better SQ from the DL. In describing SQ as very good, I still felt it was a bit "veiled", "blurred". Wanted it to sound as if I were third row center. Did not sound that way. Will be curious to learn how others assess this duo.

Best,

Richard

I agree with you. I have the Qobuz's 24/96 WAV DL and I found it (also) as a forwarding recording, not even close to "close mike" (redundancy apart), like cello & piano should be (to my taste). The strength and power of the cello is not with me, nor the piano either. Maybe from a (bad) DSD transfer? It sound like this, but there is not SACD for sale.

If you like Steve Reich (and some of the other composers) this is for you. It could be denominated as post-modern classic, in some of the way of Philip Glass, then not for all tastes. Regarding Ravel, well Ravel was a very evolved musician.

Lou Harrison's "Canticle No. 3" is very impressive regarding soundstage volume and air, with incredible clean and extended upper highs. (For me this the first time I know about Harrison's work).

Just DL from Linn Records on 24/88 Flac.

.......(and the fact that Deutsche Grammophon rarely does audiophile gems) ........

I totally agree with you!

It's a shame, this huge recording company with a lot of great performers and orchestras under his brand name. But even if we don't talk about "audiophile gems", since they are scarse on this days (mainly on classical music), at least good and normal recordings is the minimum I would like.

So right! Remembering early on in the ol' days of CDs by Deutsche Grammophon with recorded spars at DDD. Violins sounded like shrieking eels (it hurt to listen to) and the general SQ was, "burrr", cold like ice and lifeless. I noticed the attribution at HDtracks, but wanted this performance (as opposed to a specific edition) in my collection. Maybe this sounds ridiculous, but I ordered the redbook CD from Amazon for $14+ hoping XLD will convert the redbook to AIFF and provide me with a better seat in the audience.

Best,

Richard

One of the few that could rev-indicate Deutsche Grammophon is the following. Curiously even if the SPARS Code indicates DDD you can listen in the background some kind of rumble noise (low frequency) like in analog tape machines recordings. This is a violin and guitar recording, and even (I found) it's very hard to reproduce a recorded violin without hardiness, both in digital and analog, but this one is not hard or unlistanble. Also, Gil Shaham is an incredible interpreter and player, then we can forget some SQ degradation...

(I don't know if this album was listed before in this thread)

BIS only did nine or ten (some discrepancy discussed elsewhere) DSD-based SACD's, then they moved to 24 bit recordings (lots of 24/44 then moved to 24/96, all available in native PCM on eclassical site). It just so happens that this example SACD, the Jarvi Tchaikovsky, is indeed one of the nine truly done in DSD. :)

Good to know it Ted, since a lot I have says: "Recorded in 16/44" (or 24/44?)!

What I ripped last night on the PS3 is the OEHMS Kitajenko's Tschaikowsky Symphonie Nr. 5, but haven't listened yet.

Thanks,

Roch

PS/ My apologies to BIS!

And a final one, which is currently in the process of turning into one of my all time favorite albums:

Ola Gjeilo: Piano Improvisations (24/192) - amazingly beautiful

Of course is getting expensive, I just DL your recommendation!

Thanks, it's absolutely an excellent DXD recording to 24/192 DL from HDTracks.

purchase from Presto Classical, the FLAC redbook download of Anna Vinnitskaya's Solo Ravel Album.

I still had relatively little solo piano Ravel in my collection, so when I saw this as Editor's Choice in Gramophone some month's ago it made it on my "to buy" list.

Hmmm,

The nice price!

Thanks,

Roch

Looks very interesting. Available as a download or just as a disc? The composers and the album cover remind me a lot of Jordi Savall's material. (Have you had the opportunity of listening to files from any of Savall's SACDs?)

I have the CD, but it's available as a DL also: ROSSINI, G: Duetto in D major / HAYDN, M.: Divertimento in E flat major / COUPERIN, F.: Duo / VANHAL, J.B.: Divertimento (Sanderling, B.) | Compositeurs Divers par Barbara Sanderling - Télécharger et écouter l'album

I bought it because of my Savall bias, and yes I have his SACD. BTW, I'm still waiting from Amazon "Couperin: Pieces de Violes - 1728" that should being arrived on Christmas Day but is backordered.
